The Barouillet

Our Story

For 8 generations, Château Barouillet has remained in the same family. My great-grandfather Émilien was one of the pioneers of bottled wine sales in Monbazillac. The story may go back even further, but one thing is certain: this estate has existed for a very long time, and my forebears have always loved and nurtured this land.

My grandfather, Yves Alexis, known as Milou, lived through the era of agricultural modernisation, the arrival of mechanisation and chemical inputs… He would organise public festivities and bicycle races setting off from the estate. The hamlet of Barouillet was like a thriving little village of around fifty people, a lively place of gathering and exchange.

Then came the modernism of the 1980s. My father, Gérard Alexis, with over fifty vintages dedicated to moving the estate forward and bringing it into the 21st century, before passing it on to me. His was the era of bulk wine, supermarket distribution and expansion, his stroke of genius being the visionary purchase of vines in Pécharmant in 1992.

Myself, Vincent Alexiswith ten vintages under my belt and a desire to carry on the work of my predecessors by letting our terroirs express themselves as freely as possible. I converted the vineyard to organic farming from the very start in 2010, and we are now transitioning to biodynamics, always striving to show ever greater respect for our terroirs and to bring out the very best in our vines and wines. Mine is the generation of organic farming, the end of bulk and supermarket distribution, the opening up to export, and a deep respect for both the environment and the people around us.
